ALDRIDGE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY COMPETITION RULES

Aldridge P.S. shall hold 4 merit competitions and 8 annual competitions during the season.

Entry into any competition is restricted to members with a current fully paid up subscription.

These rules apply to ALL such competitions and shall only be amended at an AGM.

Other competitions may be held under these or other rules at the Committees discretion.

THE FOLLOWING RULES 2 -11 APPLY TO BOTH MERIT AND ANNUAL COMPETITIONS.

There shall be two classes: Class 1: Advanced Class 2: Novice

The winner of a season's Class 2 merit competitions shall automatically enter Class 1 for following seasons.

This rule also applies to those annual competitions restricted to Class 2 workers.

A Member will not be eligible to enter Class 2 if they have had previous experience of competition photography, has had 3 acceptances in any Open, National or International exhibition, holds a photographic distinction and/or if in the opinion of the Committee their work is of an advanced standard.

A Class 2 entrant may, at their own discretion, opt to enter Class 1competitions.

A member may only enter one class in monochrome prints, colour prints, or projected images, in one season.

All work must be originated by the entrant using a lens and a method of controlling the light passing through that lens on to a light sensitive surface, i.e. silver based emulsion or digital sensors including scanner receptors.

Any form of subsequent manipulation is allowed subject to the original image being produced as detailed above.

The entrant must own the copyright to any entry.

All images contributing to the final photograph must be the sole work of the photographer; clip art and all other imagery derived from a commercial source in not acceptable even if that material is free of copyright (RPS definition)

Failure to comply may result in disqualification.

Entrants indemnify the society from any legal action arising from their non- compliance with this rule.

Competitions shall be judged by a PAGB listed judge who shall award first, second, and third places in each section.

The judge may also, at their discretion, highly commend and commend entries.

There is no restriction as to the number of commendations but it should reflect both the quality and quantity of the entry.

Marking scheme for both monthly merit and annual competitions.

First 10 points; Second 7 points; Third 5 points; HC 3 points; C 2 points

1 point is awarded for each item entered up to a maximum of 3 points.

In the event of a tied first place both items will receive 10 points, points for second and lower as above.

In all print classes the prints may be either trade [this covers a member printing for another member] or home processed with no restriction on the process or technique used.

Prints must be mounted by the entrant. Maximum and preferred mount size 50 x 40cms [20” x 16”]

Prints must be clearly marked on the back with the entrant's name together with the title, or ‘No Title', and the class for which it is entered. No form of identification must appear on the front of the mount or on the print.

..... ....Digital files on CD must be 200ppi resolution, max width 1024 pixels, max height 768 pixels.
 
Format must be jpeg. Please not not use other formats such as tiff, gif, pdf, such entries will be disqualified.
Images must be presented correctly orientated. Your images will be projected exactly as presented, it is the entrants responsibility to ensure that colour correction, sharpness etc is exactly as they want it.
Each merit competition entry should be presented.in a clearly titled separate folder or on a new disk.
Entrants name and class must appear only on the front of the disk.
 
Image title only must be used as the file title.

All entries for any competition should be handed to the Competition Secretary not less than one week before the date of that competition. Failure to comply may result in disqualification from that competition.

While all reasonable care shall be taken with entries the society and it's officers cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss to such entries.

 

The society and its officers cannot be held responsible for any legal action arising from the public display of any entry and shall be indemnified from any such action by the entrant.

Any dispute must be made in writing to the committee whose decision shall be final and binding.

RULES SPECIFIC TO MERIT COMPETITIONS

There shall be three sections for each merit competition with classes for novice and advanced workers in each section..

Prints: a section for three monochrome prints and a section for three colour prints per entrant.

Projected images: an entry shall consist of three images that shall all be digital images presented for projection as detailed in rule 8.

While no restriction is placed on the age of work it is strongly recommended that entries should be new work from the current season and that any image may be used only twice in a club competition in any one club year. (modified 09/10 AGM)

Any entry not gaining an award may be re-entered in one more monthly merit competition.

For a merit competition to be valid there must be a minimum of 4 items in any one class.

Work submitted in a void class may be re-entered in future competitions.

The overall winner of each section shall be awarded a shield to be held for one year and a certificate of merit.

 

Second and third place shall be awarded a certificate of merit.

RULES SPECIFIC TO ANNUAL COMPETITIONS

For annual competitions members may enter up to 6 pieces of work in each competition [with the exception of the panel where each entrant may submit 1 panel] with the proviso that the total entry in any one section shall not exceed 80 items.

If the entry exceeds 80 items entries shall be removed from the bottom of each entry form with those entrants with the largest entry being targeted first. Should the 80 item limit not be achieved the number of pieces of work from each entrant may be increased at the discretion of the Competition Secretary up to a maximum of 6 items per entrant.

For an annual competition to be valid there must be a minimum of 7 items in any one class with the exception of the panels where there must be a minimum of 2 panels.

Entries in annual competitions should preferably be new work from that season or only have been used in a current season's merit competition and that any image may be used only twice in a club competition in any one club year. (modified 09/10 AGM)

The annual competitions listed below and shown in bold italics shall count towards the ‘Photographer of the Year' Award and are open to both class 1 and 2 workers.

 

Classes ‘F' ‘G' and ‘H' are restricted to Class 2 workers and do not count towards 'The Photographer of the Year'.

The following class designations shall apply to the annual competitions and the specified trophy awarded to be held for one year.
