Using RAW there is no problem using the camera LCD to check composition or exposure as you use a jpeg thumbnail generated by the camera to do this and this is not the file that holds the RAW data. Some cameras give you several options to shoot RAW files with backup Jpeg files; it's purely a personal choice. I always shoot uncompressed RAW only, I see no reason to use card space with Jpegs that I can create in PS later if I need them. Again the first step is to copy the camera files onto a CD or DVD. This disk is then used as the source for converting the RAW camera files into Adobe DNG RAW files on a separate disk. RAW files are then converted 16 bit 300ppi Tiff files and yet another disk burnt. If the lighting conditions were constant these files can be batch processed using Adobe Camera Raw in Adobe Bridge or a third party programme. I use Bibble v 4.8 quite a lot and Nikon Capture v 4.4. Examples of processing RAW files using NikonCapture as aPS CS2 plugin are here RSE is a good basic RAW conversion programme that can be downloaded for free from www.pixmantec.com or there are several other good ones out on the web including Bibble at about $45 http://www.bibblelabs.com , Phase One Capture (expensive but the market leader) and Irfanview. If the lighting was difficult or mixed each file will be converted individually and then saved in a dedicated folder on the main hard drive as a 16 bit 300ppi Tiff to retain as much information as possible. |
