REDUCING DIGITAL NOISE

The noise reduction tool in PS CS2 is highly controllable and is a very good reason to purchase this programme.

Third party programmes such as Noise Ninja can also produce good results.

Here is a good alternative method. w

Open the image >Image>mode>Lab colour

Open the channels palette. You have the following channels Lab, lightness, ‘a' and ‘b'

Highlight the ‘a' channel; this contains the colour data; and in the filter menu open Gaussian blur. In the dialog box increase the radius until you see the noise in the preview screen reduce to an acceptable level. Click OK

Now highlight the ‘b' channel and press Ctrl-F to apply the same amount of Gaussian blur as was applied to channel ‘a'

Return to Image>Mode>RGB

The noise dots will now no longer be so visible; they may even have disappeared completely.

I would not recommend using in-camera noise reduction, if possible i turn this off or adjust it to it's lowest setting.
