Workshop Index   STORAGE

It's not a good idea to store large numbers of images randomly ; or even in dedicated folders; on your hard drive. They take up a lot of space, which can affect the speed of your machine. In the worst instance the drive could fail and you'd loose all your images. At least by using one of the work flows above if you did suffer a drive failure you would have the original data to fall back on.

When I have the images in what is to be their usable condition, but unsharpened, I save these to yet another disk. I also backup all the stages onto an external hard drive as well.

This may seem to use quite a few disks but storage media is cheap and it's better to be safe than sorry.

In fact as I have an obligation to my clients I make two copies of each of the disks, one stored in the workroom and the other in my darkroom, which is detached from the house. This is probably overkill for the average hobbyist but for the few pence involved well worth doing.
